PACESETTER

ACHIEVING PERSONAL SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE

PART 3

PACESETTER – your guide to personal success

In Part 2, we examine the first four elements of the PACESETTER. In brief, to achieve
personal success, you need to work on your Perception and be Passionate about what you
are doing. You need to create a positive mental Attitude and have a sense of
Commitment in what you are doing. This will require Energy, both physical and mental
to allow you achieve what you want in life.

Let us review the rest.

SELF-SUGGESTION

Your brain is your greatest asset and liability. It is an asset if you are able to self-suggest
effectively and view life from a positive point of view. Likewise, if you are daily
confronted with problems and feel that life is just like that then you are going to tune
yourself in a path of personal destruction rather than success. By means of selfsuggestion
you could learn to re-evaluate your role and what is it that you want in life.
Your brain works on the kind of information you feed it with. If the information that is
going into your brain is negative, then the outcome is negative. It is like the proverbial
glass of water. You can either choose to visualize it as half empty or half full. Philip
Dormer Stanhope once said: “Idleness is only the refuge of weak minds.” Remember
you have a choice. You could choose to have a bad day or you could engage yourself to
seize the day. It’s all a matter of what you suggest to yourself.

ENRICHING ENVIRONMENT

Have you ever been to a funeral and felt happy? This might be a morbid question. But
the fact is you are influence by your environment. If you are working in an environment
that is unattractive and has a lot of toxic energy built up, you will feel miserable. You
have to make your environment enriching. In your workplace keep your things tidy and
neat. Remove unwanted clutter from your desk. If you work on a computer, make it a
point to clear the unwanted files in your system. Put some inspirational quotes around
your house and possibly your workplace. If you can, try to remove anything that
depresses you. You may want to remember this nice little quote from Maxim Gorky:
“When work is a pleasure, life is a joy. When work is a duty, life is slavery”.

TARGETTING

Set targets in your life that you want to achieve. Write them down on a piece of paper.
Carry the paper with you all the time. When you have achieved any one of the targets
that you have set, don’t cancel it. Circle it with a bright coloured pen as a visual
reminder of your achievement. Writing down the things you want to achieve is an
integral aspect of achieving personal success. When you just think about achieving
something, you will notice that at the very first sign of resistance to the idea that you
have, you lose interest as the idea gets displaced and looks insurmountable to achieve.
However, when you write it down, it forces you to engage in what you intend to do. You
feel yourself being drawn towards your target.

TRUST

You can only achieve the targets you set in your life if you learn to trust yourself. Trust
begins with you. When you trust yourself, you will mean what you say and say what you
mean. This will allow other people to develop trust in you. To learn how to trust
yourself you need commitment. You have to develop your mental energy and remain
resolute to your beliefs and principle. Do not allow yourself to feel beaten when you fail
in something that you have tried to achieve. View failure as feedback and try to get back
on your feet again. Accept the fact that you will not win every time. That is the Law of
Nature. There will be times when there are others who might do better than you. The
important thing is to trust yourself so that you know that you’ve given your best.

EFFICACY

Efficacy is an emotional and physical inclination towards producing a desires outcome.
It is about being efficient and effective at the same time. To be efficient you may show
up as a person who know his/her job well enough. But when you are effective you show
up as someone who knows what is to be done and gets the work done at all cost. You can
learn to become efficacious by developing your observation skills. Make it a habit to take
note of what is going around you. Be wary of changes that are occurring and make sure
that you learn to adapt quickly when there is a need to do so. Do not be like the
proverbial ‘frog in the well.’ Learn to tap into others ability and see how you can benefit
them as well. As Stephen R Covey who wrote ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’
puts it ‘Think win-win’ and ‘put first things first’. When you become more efficacious,
you will inevitably develop a sense of bearing as to where you are going and this
naturally will make you personally more successful.

RESPONSIBILITY

Ultimately, being responsible and taking responsibility is what is going to make you
stand out from the rest. Here again the choice is yours. As Shakespeare puts it succinctly
in Julius Caesar: ‘…some are born into greatness, others achieve greatness and others
have greatness thrust upon them…’ Whatever the situation you can only feel a sense of
personal satisfaction if you learn to take responsibility of what you do in life. This brings
you back to the first element of the PACESETTER – Perception and Passion. That is the
whole circle of life after all.

Right now, you can begin on the road of your own self-discovery by applying the
PACESETTER in your life and you are on your journey to achieving personal success.
